SEAC Troxell has a combat jump, achieved the pay grade of E-9 and the rank of SEAC, and has continued to lead hard with his nearly 4 decades of experience at all levels of the military. In this conversation, he shares his experiences in combat during Operation Just Cause and Desert Storm, highlighting the need for aggressive decision-making and a focus on excellence. SEAC Troxell emphasizes the importance of solid leadership and the development of a strive-for-excellence mentality. He also addresses the challenges facing the military today, including prioritizing combat readiness and instilling a sense of pride and ownership in the force. He discusses the importance of building self-discipline and ownership in the military. He emphasizes the need for leaders to instill a healthy fear and respect in their subordinates rather than relying on punishment. SEAC Troxell also highlights the lack of leaders who demonstrate excellence and strive for continuous improvement. He advocates for improving professional military education (PME) to focus on combat scenarios and building the best version of each service member. Troxell stresses the importance of understanding global threats and the need for credible deterrence. Two great things about this article: (1), a Navy SEAL explains why classic literary works are relevant and (2), the military tradition of the after-action report has apparently been turned into a college class. One can only hope more classes like this will pop up at other college campuses. And if a few more people switch their major to literature because of this SEAL’s advice, that would be even better.

Are you interested in becoming an Army officer after graduation? Look no further than ROTC! ROTC (Reserve Officers' Training Corps) offers Basic and Advanced Courses for students who have committed to entering a contract and completing the program. Contracted students have the opportunity to enter the Army as an officer upon graduation, either on Active or Reserve duty. While most students are contracted on scholarship, some are contracted non-scholarship in conjunction with National Guard or Reserve service. It's important to note that a student MUST be contracted in order to enter the Advanced Course, and Basic Course credit must be obtained before entering the Advanced Course. If you're a Cadet who is qualified to contract, you'll most likely do so during your Sophom*ore year, unless you're on a 4 year National Scholarship, in which case you'll contract during your Freshman year. Not only does ROTC offer the opportunity to become an Army officer, but it also allows Cadets to evaluate their ability to handle college life and course work during their Freshman year. Take advantage of this incredible opportunity to gain valuable leadership skills and serve your country. Contact your local ROTC program to learn more about becoming a contracted student. #armyrotc #joinarmyrotc #discipline #armyofficer #fitnessmotivation #inspiration #motivation #armystrong #rotc #scholarship #sandiego

A good article from Navy Times discussing our latest efforts to expand Billet Based Advancement.I sat down with the author, Diana Stancy, last week to talk about our work to combine the enlisted distribution and advancement systems. Great conversation and I am grateful for her explanation in Navy Times. The part of Billet Based Advancemts that focuses on Journeymen (E5 & E6) is called Detailing Marketplace Assignment Policy (DMAP). The article focuses on our recent expansion of DMAP to cover all advancements to those ranks for DC and ABE Sailors. So, once qualified by passing an exam, Sailors in those two ratings advance by applying for a job at the next rank in a competitive marketplace or by selection to a qualifying billet in their command.

US Navy Chief Yeoman Jasmine LaRue, from Mobile, Alabama, has been serving for 12 years and is currently with . We asked about her #CallToService, career progression, and how time in uniform has changed her. "My call to service is being a servant leader and making sure our #Sailors have all the support they need to support and complete the mission. When I joined back in 2012, I had no real goals or aspirations and made that decision because I did not want to go to college and did not want to stay in my hometown."#ForgedByTheSea"I have a goal I would like to reach before retiring and that’s to become a Command Senior Chief or a Command Master Chief, because in the current climate, it is getting harder for Sailors to continue in service and persevere through, in many cases at no fault of their own, in many cases it’s the leadership." #WhyIServe"I believe I can use my call to service to show Sailors there is leadership out there that cares and that they are not just a quota to meet or a billet to fill. I feel I can best do that as a Command Senior Chief or Master Chief." #Transform"I have changed in so many ways that even I still cannot believe it. I’m a college graduate now and I have been able to come out of my comfort zone and have many exuberating experiences. I have also become a person that strives to do and be more and I would describe myself as ambitious now compared to my past self." #People"Something I would like to share with anyone interested in joining the forces is to form your own opinions off your personal experiences. Negativity can spread like wildfire when you surround yourself with the wrong crowd. Surround yourself with personnel who have good character and have your best interest in mind. Remember we are a fighting force and completing the mission is important to sustaining our way of life in our country. It may not feel like it at times but remember that what you do is important no matter how minute you may think it is, because we each are a small piece of the bigger puzzle and working together is what will help complete the mission. Most importantly, stay true to yourself and your personal values as a human, and always make time to take of your mind, body, and soul."

Looking for insights: I’m using this summer to prepare for my fall semester offering of the Human Factors in Combat course at the Naval Academy. This course was originally created by General Allen while he was Commandant of the Naval Academy just after 9/11. I brought it back this past semester amd offered it again for the first time since then. Attached is my syllabus from this last semester. This summer, I’ll be refining the syllabus again for the coming fall semester offering. Since many of my LinkedIn contacts have considerable experience in this material, I’d like to see if you have any suggestions on topics as well as readings that we might have missed. Each of the 15 weeks in the semester will focus on a specific factor (sleep deprivation, fear, killing, moral injury, etc.) If there is a topic that we’ve missed or a reading (20-30 pages max) that you think we should include (please be specific), I’d love to receive your comments on this post. Ideally this course provides my students, who will all be Navy or Marine officers upon graduation, familiarization with human factors in combat that they must navigate for themselves but also prepare their sailors and Marines for as well. Bonus question if you’re feeling sporty: what practical exercise can be assigned to the students that gives them an experience with the topic. For example, for the week on fear, they jump from the 10m swim platform. For the week on death, they write a letter to the parents of a simulated sailor or Marine in their unit that was killed. I’m looking for activities that can be done on the Academy grounds. All of this is for prep for my course. Thank you for your time and insight!

The Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps was caught off guard by the situation. Senior enlisted personnel must advocate vigorously for the well-being of their junior Marines. Rather than excusing the oversight of Marines at the training facility by attributing it to disinformation or highlighting the construction of a new firehouse, he should be holding accountable all enlisted personnel and officers who failed in their duties. Leadership should prioritize professional courage over merely being executive figureheads or yes-men. Authentic leadership requires action and integrity.

I was passed over for promotion to Lieutenant Colonel this year.I thought I would crush the competition. I am working on my 10th collegiate degree. War veteran. Military education qualified (I even graduated from the NIU MSSI as a Captain, while pulling double-duty with my Reserve unit). Leadership and broadening roles. Oversaw and directly supported the creation of products that my current organization uses throughout its ranks. Nothing adverse (it goes without saying). And yet, I didn't make it. It hurts. It stings. Sadly, this is something I am all-too-familiar with. And just like each time this happens, I get back up, think about where things went wrong, and immediately get to work on getting to the desired end-state. I know I can do it, even when times like this makes me feel otherwise. So friends, I ask you: what do you do when things don't go your way? Do you quietly accept it? Do you catastrophize? Or do you use it as fuel to redouble your efforts and find innovative new solutions to tackle the problem? Remember, whenever you feel defeated, work to get RID of it, by being (1) Resilient; (2) Innovative; and (3) Determined. You *will* achieve your goal.

🌟 **Lessons from Admiral McRaven: The Power of Making Your Bed Every Morning** 🛏️🇺🇸Admiral William H. McRaven, a retired United States Navy four-star admiral who served as the ninth commander of the United States Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) is best known for his 2014 commencement speech at the University of Texas at Austin, where he shared insights on life lessons learned during Navy SEAL training. In his speech, Admiral McRaven emphasized the importance of starting the day with a simple task: making your bed. He described how the discipline of making one's bed every morning can set the tone for the day ahead, instilling a sense of accomplishment and order amidst life's chaos. McRaven explained that by completing this small task, individuals can begin their day with a sense of pride and motivation to tackle bigger challenges.McRaven's speech went viral, resonating with millions of people around the world who were inspired by his message of personal responsibility, resilience, and the power of small acts of discipline. His words have since been immortalized in his book, "Make Your Bed: Little Things That Can Change Your Life...And Maybe the World," where he expands on the lessons learned from Navy SEAL training and how they can be applied to everyday life.Overall, Admiral William H.
